About me & my work:

Trained as an illustrator and typographer, I've been practicing book and exhibition design, memorial design, and installation of poetry works in public space. For 15 years I have run my independent creative office, which is shaped and colored by a close network of great friends and passionate professionals. I seem to have a strong preference for an environment of complexity, albeit created by the physical content, or by a contemporary or historical social context.

Today I am widening my eye to visual branding of neighborhoods, and developing visual strategies for local communities to expose themselves. These efforts also aim to integrate my passions and skills in our challenging context of human transition, sustainability, social permaculture and increasing historical awareness. One example is my design of a huge public portrait of Nelson Mandela in the Transvaal district of Amsterdam, which I entirely produced together with local residents. This widely seen, public art work has greatly contributed to the social cohesion in the multi-etnic neighborhood.

My activities are extending to design thinking and projects of visual research. Aside to my studio work, I have developed design workshop programs, together with my colleague and close friend Maarten Verweij. Together we have been lecturing and working with students at many different universities in China, over the past eight years. Answering to a need of methodical design education in China, we stimulate creative students to look beyond personal preferences and to reveil hidden (urban) structures and processes of their daily environments and life styles. It is our strong belief that researching cities is crucial for them, to get an understanding of our complex world of today. The other way around, the students give us wonderful experiences and a real insight in China!

I enjoy living and working in Rotterdam, aside to travelling as much as I can. I like big cities as well as small villages; for some years I have experienced the rural life in Portugal, where I transformed an old ruin into a charming house, together with my partner.
