About me & my work:

Formally: I have a PhD in the history of ideas, have consulted to c-suite for 25+ years and have led the turnaround of a public institution as its CEO.

Informally, and far more insightfully, I have been called an historian and midwife of ideas and a leadership provocateur.

I love life-giving ideas. Some say I have a rare gift for sparking and animating new conversations from ideas old and new. I've been doing this for over twenty-five years with parents and communities, and with business, government and not-for-profit leaders. I guess I'm half philosopher and half story-teller. My ability to breathe new life into ideas and conversations is grounded in my own eclectic story: from debilitating childhood illnesses to turnaround CEO; from little schooling to a PhD in the history of ideas; and from truck-driving to advising senior leaders in mining, infrastructure, and education.

From the ancient Near East to the original Americans, from Socrates to Confucius, and from Maoritanga to the post-genocide leaders of Rwanda, women and men across the globe and millennia have sought wisdom. Far from esoteric, wisdom offers us richly human and remarkably rigorous ways to reframe the concerns of leadership, strategy, policy, and much more.

I have given keynote addresses at, among others, the Harvard Club, McKInsey & Company global partners, Vatican, TEDxGeneva, Rotary International, and Vivid Sydney.

My latest book, Lead with Wisdom (Wiley, 2014) brings wisdom into dialogue with the everyday world of leadership.
