About me & my work:

I am an artist and computer scientist whose work explores the relationship between humans and technology.

My projects include We Feel Fine, a search engine for human emotions; I Want You To Want Me, an installation about online dating; Cowbird, a public library of human experience; 10 x 10, a system for encapsulating moments in time; The Whale Hunt, a series of photographs timed to match my heartbeat; and I Love Your Work, an interactive film about the daily lives of sex workers.

I studied computer science and photography at Princeton University, with Brian Kernighan and Emmet Gowin, respectively. I won a 2005 Fabrica fellowship and three Webby Awards, and my work has also been recognized by Ars Electronica, AIGA, and the state of Vermont, for which I co-designed the state quarter. Print Magazine named me a “2008 New Visual Artist,” the World Economic Forum named me a “2009 Young Global Leader,” and TIME Magazine named my project, Cowbird, one of the “50 Best Websites of 2012.”

My work has been exhibited all over the world, including at MoMA (New York), Le Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the Central Academy of Fine Arts (Beijing), the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), and the Pace Gallery (New York).

I have lectured widely about my work, including at TED, MoMA, Google, The New York Times, The World Economic Forum, the Sundance Film Festival, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia, and Yale Universities, and The Rhode Island School of Design.

For 440 days beginning on my 30th birthday, I documented my life with one photo a day.

Born in northern Vermont, I currently live in Brooklyn, New York.
